The Rt. Rev. James Scott Mayer is the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Northwest Texas (No. 1035 in American Succession). He has announced his retirement effective June 1, 2027, prompting the transition process for the next bishop (see page-3191807).

Ministry & Episcopate

• Election & Consecration: Elected November 22, 2008; consecrated March 21, 2009, with Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori as chief consecrator.
• Diocese of Fort Worth: Served as Provisional Bishop starting in 2015, guiding the diocese through breakaway litigation. Following its 2022 reunification with the Diocese of Texas, he became Assisting Bishop in Texas (oversight ended late 2022).
• Parochial Ministry: Rector (1995–2008) and Associate (1994) at Church of the Heavenly Rest, Abilene; Curate at St. James', Texarkana.

• Education: B.B.A. from Texas Tech University (1977); M.Div. from Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest (1992).

• Born in Dallas, Texas on September 23, 1955. Worked in automotive aftermarket sales before seminary.
